This past weekend the 2010 Junior National Track and Field Time Trials were held in Moncton, NB. Athletes from all over the country were in attendance at the Université de Moncton stadium in hopes of qualifying for the upcoming World Championships which will also take place in Moncton later on this month.
Rachael McIntosh from Bluenose Athletics, NS competed in the Heptathlon and won (4938pts) with standard at the CE Trials. She was also 12th in the 100m hurdles (15.01) and 9th in the high jump (1.60m). Mattias Wolter, also from the Bluenose Athletics Club, won the 3000m steeplechase (9:00.48) with standard and finished 7th in the 5000m (15:10.53). Both Rachael and Mattias are coached by Tanya Daniels.
Meanwhile another Nova Scotia native, Chelsea Whalen from Launchers Athletics, finished 1st overall in shot put (13.93m) and second in javelin (46.75m). Chelsea is coached by Steve Wohlmuth
Geneviève Lalonde from the O2 athletics club, in New Brunswick, competed in the 3000m steeplechase and the 1500m. Lalonde won the 3000m steeplechase (6:37.41) with standard and was second in the 1500m (4:27.35) with standard. While her teammate Ryan Cassidy finished second in the 3000m steeplechase (9:02.27) with standard. Both Lalonde and Cassidy are coached by Joel Bourgeois.
The Saint John Track Club’s Caleb Jones set a new championship record this weekend in javelin. Jones easily won javelin by throwing and impressive 69.68m with standard. Meanwhile, Jones’ teammate, Robin Bone, walked away with a well deserved bronze medal in women’s pole vaulting. She cleared 3.65m.
Adam Gaudes from the Fast Tracks Club, also in NB, competed in the 4x400m relay and walked away with a bronze (48.19) and he also finished 10th in the 200m (22.70). Gaudes is coached by Greg Allan.
It was a very impressive weekend for both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. There were 10 medals and one championship record set at this championship. Also, there was a first place finish for the NB women's 4x100m and a third place finish for the NB men's 4x100m teams in the provincial branch category. Along with a bronze for the Chebucto women's 4x100m in the club category as well.
