Our History
Canadian Sport Centres (CSCs) were created in partnership with Sport Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Coaching Association of Canada and the provincial governments. The decision to proceed with establishing a network of centres was based on the following objectives shared by the national partners:
- To support the achievement of high performance sport excellence by Canadian athletes, including athletes with a disability, through fair and ethical means, in a harassment-free environment;
- To contribute to the holistic development of high performance athletes;
- To provide an enriched training environment in key locations across the country;
- To promote the profession of coaching; and:
- To stimulate sport development across the country.
Beginning with the CSC Calgary in 1994, the Canadian Sport Centre network has now expanded to include: Montreal, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Atlantic Canada and Pacific Sport. Sport Canada’s support for the Canadian Sport Centres network and the individual centres within it is based on the following principles:
- Services complement and enhance programming for targeted national teams.Services are provided in line with the principles of long-term athlete development.
- Delivery of core services are of a consistent standard.
- Services are available to athletes in accordance with their official language needs.
Partnerships at both the national and provincial levels are important for the development of a sustainable Canadian sport system. Support is provided for only one CSC per province or region of provinces/territories.

Presently..
There are approximately 150 CSCA Athletes in Atlantic Canada; the majority of these athletes train full-time in the region and use the CSCA services regularly. We are supported by all four provincial governments, Sport Canada and sponsors. The CSCA employs 3 full-time staff in Halifax, one full-time Athlete Service Manager in New Brunswick and part-time Athlete Service Managers in both Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The CSCA also employs four full time Sport Scientists, including physiologists, strength and conditioning specialists and sport psychologists. The athletes have access to some of the best sport scientists in the region. Along with the sport scientists on staff, the CSCA has serveral sport science and sport medicine providers on contract or pay-per-service arrangements.
New Offices
In the fall of 2010, the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic will be moving into our new office in Clayton Park. Housed in the new Canada Games Centre, the CSCA will now be able to provide athletes with facilities and services in one location. We are very excited!
